Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk
Memory Walk 2004 was held Saturday morning, February 7th at Southwest Community Church. Participants donated pledges to benefit programs and services for the estimated 8,000 persons living with the disease in the Coachella Valley. Individuals, teams and dogs were treated to breakfast prior to the two-mile walk, followed by a barbeque lunch on the park-like grounds while a jazz band played live music.

Artist Demo
Desert Art Center hosted painter Bruce Howard Thomas at its meeting, February 3, 7 pm. The lecture was entitled Artist Tune-up, teaching artists to rethink the way they look at art.

Indio Community Center Basketball
Indio Community Center held open court basketball for the community, Thursday evening, February 5. The evening brought a large turnout with all ages playing basketball at the Community Center.

Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony
Eleven youth of the valley received scholarships to the Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony. The scholarships provide free private lessons for the children.
Claire Stone, 11, of La Quinta and Ryan Buonarigo, 12, of Indio practice their music. Rudy Silva, 13, of Indio, is happy to be selected for the scholarship. Bruno Perthus, 8, of Indian Wells, plays the cello. Emma Burnett, 12, of Bermuda Dunes, plays the violin in the symphony.

Bighorn Fishing Derby
The bighorn fishing derby gave over 200 members and family an opportunity to catch 800 pounds of trout from the pond, Catching prize-winning trout gave the group memories that will last for a lifetime.
Volunteers from local high schools helped little ones reel in some big kahunas.
These boys are ready to tackle everything great in life.
Fishing is a faimly sport at BIGHORN.
Families had an opportunity to see breathtaking valley views from a tethered hot air balloon.

Yoga in Golf Clinic
A one-hour golf clinic focusing on improving the golfer’s balance and flexibility by applying yoga techniques to the golf swing was presented by the Westin Mission Hills on Saturday afternoon, February 7th. Instructors included Barry Clayton, Westin’s Director of Instruction and DPGA Teacher of the Year, and Tracy Smith, certified yoga instructor and personal trainer. Participants brought a golf club and plenty of enthusiasm and concentration.

Mommy and Me and Dad Too!
The Coachella Valley Recreation and Park District child care programs offers a “Mommy and Me and Dad Too!” class at the La Quinta Community Center, Friday mornings for toddlers and their parents, emphasizing both learning and socialization activities. Parents report that their children look forward all week to their classes, taught by instructor Jaime Brown.

Visiting Nurse Association
Visiting Nurse Association of the Inland Counties Palm Desert Hospice gave flowers to each hospice patient and also members of the bereavement support groups. This is the fourth years the Visiting Association has handed out flowers. Brent Hall of Palm Springs Florist donated the flowers.
Susan Katzman, of La Quinta, arranges the flowers. Hospice Nurse Linda Iverson, of Palm Desert, places tags on the vases.  The employees at Visiting Nurses Assocation stand with flowers they will be giving out to patients. Kathlyn Curnow, of Cathedral City, places the flowers in a box to be handed out to the hospice patients.

ROSE Awards
The YMCA of The Desert held their 13th annual Recognition of Service Excellence awards at the Palm Valley Country Club in Palm Desert. The event was held to honor the employees and volunteers of The YMCA of The Desert.

United Way of the Desert Luncheon
United Way of the Desert held its annual Mid-Campaign Report Luncheon at the Marriott Rancho Las Palmas Resort on Friday afternoon, February 6. The United Way of the Desert raises funds each year from employees, businesses and individuals which are distributed to non-profit agencies serving the needs of the local community. The Make Your Caring Count theme was illustrated by the 55 percent of funds raise towards of its $1.9 million goal.
