Basketball tournament
Black History Month activities at James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center in Palm Springs included a basketball tournament for men 18 and older February 8. The 16th Annual Black History Month Parade will take place on Palm Canyon Drive February 22.
 










Olympic inspiration
Pacific Western Bank, Best Best & Krieger and Maryanov Madsen Gordon & Campbell hosted an inspirational visit from Olympic gold-medalist Billy Mills at the Miramonte Resort in Indian Wells February 6. Mills, winner of the 10,000 meter race in the 1964 Olympics, shared some of his life experiences with local businesspeople.
 













Circus Chimera
Circus Chimera entertained crowds with several presentations of Sueños de Luna (Moon Dreams) at Bagdouma Park in Coachella February 6-9. The circus also traveled to Twentynine Palms, Desert Hot Springs and Cathedral City.
 












Club Y
Junior high school students can spend their Saturday evenings at the Family YMCA of the Desert in Palm Desert. Club Y offers games, sports, music, karaoke, prizes, occasional dances, movies, computer games and a snack bar.
 








La Quinta dog show
The City of La Quinta Community Services Department held a neighborhood dog show in Fitz Burns Park in La Quinta February 8. Dogs competed for medals in the obstacle course, owner look alike, most obedient and most outrageous trick categories.
 











Royal Palms dance
Dancers move to the beat at Royal Palms Community in Cathedral City the first and third Thursday of the month November through March.
 













"Snowflake"
Students and teachers from 19 local schools attended the McCallum Theatre Institute's presentation of the silent comedy, "Snowflake," for two shows February 5. The students studied the show over six sessions beforehand with their classroom teachers and teaching artists from the Institute's Aesthetic Education Program.
 









United Way luncheon
Fundraisers for the United Way of the Desert reported the total money raised by their campaigns at a luncheon at the Marriott Rancho Las Palmas in Rancho Mirage February 5.
