Derrik Lewis Musical Chairs: Auditions were held for the "Derrik Lewis Musical Chairs " concert series at Palm Canyon Theater in downtown Palm Springs. Dickson Hughes played the piano for performers who auditioned for musical director Wayne Abravanel (cq) and director, producer Derrik Lewis.







Open Mike Night: Contestants competed for prizes at "Open Mic Comedy Night" Friday evening at the Civic Center Courtyard in La Quinta. The event, a first for the La Quinta Parks and Recreation Department was designed for teenagers 13-17 years of age.







Arts and Crafts Camp: Michaels offers a Summer Arts and Crafts Camp for children at the store in Palm Desert Monday through Friday throughout the summer. The students made tote bags painted with a parrot and leaf pattern July 8.




Pets On Parade: The 4th Annual Pets on Parade Luncheon held at The Lodge at Rancho Mirage was the place to be Sunday afternoon. This year's RSVP's numbered over 400 guests. Winners of the Photo Journal Competition were announced, in eight separate categories; judged by the KMIR TV 6 news anchors. Proceeds from the event support two different causes: Pegasus Riding Academy and the Animal Samaritans.







Indoor putting contest: The Palm Desert chamber of commerce held the 2nd annual Putt Putt on El Paseo an indoor putting contest held in area business along the El Paseo corridor. Each hole was individually designed by the participating businesses and prizes were awarded for best individual score, best team score, best team uniform and most indidual hole-in-one.






UCLA Desert Softball Camp: The 2003 NCAA national championship women's softball team held a one day softball camp at Palm Desert Civic Center Baseball Park under the direction of head coach Sue Enquist to teach the fundamentals of softball to girls between the ages of 8-18 years.

58 girls signed up for the camp and received hands on training in hitting, throwing, fielding, batting, base running and sliding. Coach Enquist talked about the fundamentals in technique but also about attitude and commitment in playing the game on a emotional level as metaphors for life.







TEENDANCE: The Indio Community Center and the Indio Youth Task Force play host to valley teens the second Saturday of each month for a live-D.J. dance from 7-10 p.m. The evening is staffed by volunteers including both the Indio Police Department and the C.V.R.P.D. The cost is $2 per person, and a school id is required, (grades 8-12). The next scheduled dance is Saturday, August 9th.






Desert Regional Medical Center Scholarship Awards Breakfast: The Desert Regional Medical Center Auxiliary volunteers awarded four $1500 scholarships to Volunteen's , volunteers between the ages of 13 to 18 who provided 100 hrs of community service to the Desert Regional Medical Center at the scholarship awards breakfast. Scholarship recipients must maintain a 2.5 gpa while attending a trade school or university while on scholarship. Many of this years recipients plan on continuing to volunteer at the medical center or other areas. 121 Volunteen's provide community service at Desert Regional Medical Center.






Young at Art: The Coachella Valley Museum and Cultural Center in Indio offered 5-week classes in drawing, pottery, poetry and sculpture for through July 18 during the Young at Art program. The program culminated with a reception for the young artists, ages 8-12, July 20.
