College and Career Day
Palm Springs High School held a College & Career Day for students on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Many businesses in the Valley as well as colleges throughout California were represented and gave students the opportunity to ask questions about possible future careers.

Cathedral City High School football team earned its first Desert Valley League victory in a home game against Indio Oct. 22. The Lions won the game 14-6 with solid defensive efforts by senior Kyle Aiken and junior halfback Drew Zimmer.

Festival of Waters
Saturday, October 16, and Sunday, October 17, the Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce sponsored the Annual Festival of the Waters, a celebration of the Mission Springs Water District award-winning Gold Medal Drinking Water and the natural hot mineral water available in the hotels and spas. Following the Opening Ceremonies led by Lane Sarasohn, President of the Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce, various entertainment began and continued throughout the two-day event. Vendors participating in the festival included food, arts and crafts, jewelry and other fine gifts for the holidays. Free scenic tours of Desert Hot Springs were offered on Saturday.

Angel View's Fall Fashion Show
Angel View Crippled Children's Foundation held its 20th Fashion Show, luncheon and open-air boutique on Thursday, Oct. 21. The event held at Melvyn's at the Ingleside Inn in Palm Springs included a silent auction, dazzling productions, a culinary experience and the best master of ceremonies in town. Entertainment was by Austin Rey, Johnny Meza, Lola Rossi and Harpo the Clown. All proceeds benefited the Angel View Crippled Children's Foundation.

Police Golf Tournament
Indio Police Officers Association (IOPA) held a golf Tournament Oct. 20 at Indian Palms Country Club in Indio. Proceeds from 18-hole golf game went to a widows and orphans trust fund set up by IPOA.

Survivor — World Island Getaway
Amelia Earhart Elementary's “Survivor — World Island Getaway” was hosted on Saturday, Oct. 23, by the school's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Each fall the school hosts an event that is fun and relaxing and allows families to meet new people and find out more about the PTO. The “Survivor theme” was chosen because it lends itself to the creation of tribes (grade levels) and a healthy competition based on personal challenge.

Chocolateria at The Commissary
Oct. 22 marked the invitation-only opening of The Commissary in Rancho Mirage, a collective of Russell Olden's Olden Days Caterings, Chocolateria's fine chocolates, fabulous fudge, and scrumptious cookies, Luscious Cheesecakes by Kelly and Above the Best Services by Marla Meaney, servicing private jet clients. At this event, Chocolateria premiered the first ever Mousse & Fudge Carving Station.

The 4th Annual National Monument Celebration
The fourth annual celebration of the founding of the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument was held Saturday, Oct. 23, at the National Monument Visitor Center. The event was free to the public and festivities included hands-on arts and nature activities for the children provided by the S.C.A.R.P. Gallery and presentations on the National Wilderness Preservation System.

MAGMAficent Display
St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert held its Fifth Annual MAGMAficent display of volcanoes on Tuesday, Oct. 19. Grades pre-K through 8 are invited each year to attend the “explosions.” It is the highlight of the Volcanology unit in Earth Science and a chance for the students to show off what they have learned and a way of teaching others.
