Desert Business Achievement Awards Dinner

The fourth Desert Business Achievement Awards dinner was held on Oct. 21 at the Indian Wells Country Club honoring Building Horizons as the nonprofit group of the year. Proceeds from the dinner provide scholarships to College of the Desert students who transfer to the University California at Riverside and California State University, Palm Desert Campus.

Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert welcomes the Vet Exhibit. Children may learn about pet adoption, taking care of animals and pretend to be a veterinarian. The exhibit is sponsored by Animal Samaritans, SPCA Inc., The Aven Foundation and Coeta, and Donald Barker Foundation.

Agriculture Day at Gerald Ford Elementary School

Gerald Ford Elementary School held “A Day on The Farm: Agriculture Day” Oct. 23. Kindergarten and first-grade pupils learned about local agriculture from the farm to the table.

Halloween Carnival

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School in Indio held a Halloween Carnival Oct. 26. Events included a costume parade and contest for the children, as well as carnival games, a jump house and plenty of delicious food. Classroom groups staged dances under the main tent to the music of the “Monster Mash” and “Ghostbusters.” For the bravest of souls, there was a haunted house full of horrible monsters.

Fourth Annual Run For Reading

The football field at Coachella Valley High School was filled with about 260 participants of the Fourth Annual Run for Reading Event, which is put on by the Riverside County Office of Education. Runners completed two laps of the track running or walking and received free t-shirts and books donated by Scholastic Books. There were balloon hat makers and face painters on hand, and both a boy’s and girl model bikes were raffled off. Major sponsors included Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Costco companies.

Tiny Tot Carnival

The La Quinta Senior Center was alive with children’s laughter Friday evening. Sponsored by the city of La Quinta’s Community Services Department, the annual Tiny Tot Halloween Carnival was targeted to the 7-and-younger age group. Volunteers included Casey Conoway, a graduate of the Tiny Tot Program. Activities included an assortment of games run by costumed “carnies.” There was even a “Monster Mash” dance and a limbo game headed by a cavewoman and the Grim Reaper.

Food Drive and Pumpkin Patch

Tarbell Realtors on Highway 111 in Palm Springs hosted their “Scare Away Hunger” food drive for Valley charities through “Food in Need of Distribution,” with a goal of raising 1,000 cans of food. Pumpkins were given away in exchange for canned food, and participants were treated to hot dogs and popcorn. Harpo T. Clown was on hand, creating an assortment of animals out of long balloons, and just plain old clowning around. There was a caricature artist, face painters, a coloring contest and a pumpkin painting contest, as well as a jump house for the kids to work off extra energy. In their commitment to the community, Tarbell Realtors is continuing to take in donations of canned goods.

Sacred Heart Catholic School in Palm Desert hosted an Octoberfest Carnival on Oct. 26. There were games and activities, including a petting zoo, pony rides and a dunk tank Carl’s Jr. had their Lamborghini Bertone on display, and Las Consuelas provided food. There also was a cake walk and cotton candy available.

United Way of the Desert Kick-Off Luncheon

The United Way of the Desert announced its campaign at the United Way Kick-Off Luncheon at the Marriott's Rancho Las Palmas Resort and Spa Oct. 22. The luncheon event brought more than 300 supporters and volunteers in the community.
