'Wheels for Life' Bike-A-Thon

'Bowling for Bucks'
The McCallum Theatre's Eighth Annual Fundraiser, “Bowling for Bucks,” was held Oct. 9 at Fantasy Lanes Bowling Center in Indio. The event provided a fun day of bowling along with food, awards, music, an auction, and more, while raising funds for the McCallum's educational programs. Proceeds from this event support the operations, free arts education and community outreach programs of the McCallum Theatre Institute. The theater's education programs serve more than 22,500 Coachella Valley school children each year.

Fantasy Cruise
The Stroke Recovery Center “Fantasy Cruise” in Palm Springs began in late summer 1993 when recreational therapists noticed many stroke patients were unable to take summer vacations. The idea of having a “cruise” without leaving the Stroke Center building grew into the Annual Fantasy Cruise and has become one of the center's most popular client activities. The activity-packed “cruise” this year took participants to Italy and Switzerland the week of Oct. 11.

Thousand Palms Library Senior Programs
The Thousand Palms Library chose Canine Companions for Independence, an assistance dog organization for children and adults, as the topic for this October's senior program. It demonstrated how important proper puppy training is to the development of an assistance dog. Senior programs are held on the second Wednesday of the month from October through April at the library.

Samsung World Championship Golf at BIGHORN
The prestigious Samsung World Championship was held Oct. 11 through 17 at BIGHORN Golf Club's Canyons Course in Palm Desert. The top 20 LPGA players competed for the $825,000 purse. Bighorn members and guests enjoyed the member tent with a scenic view of the golf course, big screen televisions and refreshments.

'Mini-Muster' Fire Safety Training
Each October since 1993, the Historical Society of Palm Desert has coordinated “Mini-Muster,” a fire safety program for the Desert Sands Unified School District . Firefighters direct and guide third graders through team field activities designed to teach fire prevention and self-protection. The event, held on Oct. 12 at Gerald Ford Elementary School included students of James Carter, Gerald Ford, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington Charter elementary schools.

Water Polo
The Indio High School water polo team prevailed over Cathedral City 's team at a game held on Oct. 13. Marcos Perez scored seven goals to lead Indio, which improved to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in the DVL. Daniel Grijalva added four goals while Orlando Ochoa had three. Goalie Randel Smothers made 12 saves.

'Lights on Afterschool'
The Family YMCA of the Desert, in conjunction with J.C. Penney Afterschool and YMCA of the USA, celebrated “Lights on Afterschool” with a pasta dinner, games and a family fun night at the La Quinta Preschool YMCA on Oct. 14. The event showcased YMCA programs and helped call attention to the importance of after-school programs in the lives of children, families and communities. The Family YMCA of the Desert provides activities and childcare for over 950 children in the Coachella Valley at its 12 sites.

United Way of the Desert Kickoff Luncheon
United Way of the Desert kicked off this year's community-wide fund-raising campaign with a luncheon at the Marriott's Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage on Oct. 14. The annual United Way fundraising campaign takes place each year throughout the Coachella Valley from October through April. Hundreds of local volunteers work to coordinate campaigns in their workplaces to raise money for the 25 programs and services that are funded by United Way .
