'The Crucible'
College of the Desert held auditions for Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” on Wednesday evening. About 60 people had auditioned through Wednesday, as tryouts continued through the week. Actors were paired up for scenes based on the roles they requested to try out for, and roles a panel of directors and judges requested them to read.

Desert Museum
The Palm Springs Desert Museum held a Mexican Independence Family Day offering an art exhibit of Mexican work and dance performances that reflected Mexican culture and crafts. People attending the event could make a mask or flag. Approximately 300 families attended.

California Desert Chorale
California Desert Chorale, led by Jackie Doyle, has entered its 10th season of singing in the Coachella Valley. The three-concert season includes Christmas with the Chorale; Bruckner, Mozart and Vivaldi; and An Evening at the Pops. The Desert Chorale has openings for all voices.

Employment Expo
The Ninth Annual Valley-wide Employment Expo was held on Sept. 11 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The Expo benefits both employees and job seekers. Each year the number of job seekers and employers continues growing and each year the number of local businesses offering support and sponsorship increases.

Mexican Independence Day
A celebration for Mexican Independence Day was held on Sunday at Bagdouma Park in Coachella. From morning until night, a main stage held musical performances and queen crowning. Vendors and games lined the park for the large crowds attending the event.

La Quinta Park
The city of La Quinta celebrated the grand opening of La Quinta Park last Saturday evening. Mayor Don Adolph welcomed everyone to the Hawaiian-themed celebration, complete with hula dancers and hot dogs and cake for everyone.

Beach Volleyball
The beach volleyball courts were busy Thursday evening at Big League Field of Dreams in Cathedral City as the co-ed teams practiced for the season starting Sept. 17. Teams play a seven-week season, two matches per night with playoffs.

Desert Winds Freedom Band
Desert Winds Freedom Band is a group of gay and gay-friendly performers who enjoy playing concert band music. The group was founded in the fall of 2001 by Gary Moline. The band’s appearances include The Rainbow Festival of Flags in Cathedral City, The Palm Springs AIDS walk, and First Friday in Palm Springs.
