Annual Blessing of the Animals
A traditional blessing of the animals was held Oct. 2 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in La Quinta. The ceremony is held annually in October, the same month the Roman Catholic Church honor St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

Punt, Pass & Kick
Punt, Pass & Kick, a national program that is supported by the National Football League and Pepsi and wants every child to have an equal opportunity to compete. The program creates a lively and engaging forum for boys and girls ages 8-15 to compete separately against their peers in punting, passing and kicking. Winners from each local competition will move on to compete at an assigned sectional competition. Pictures seen here are from the competition held at the Indio Boys & Girls Club on Oct. 1.

Arabian Nights Pageant Auditions
Auditions were held on Oct. 2 at Riverside County Fairgrounds for the performances of Arabian Nights, which will be staged every night at the Riverside County Fairy and National Date Festival in February. Steve Davison directs, produces and wrote the script. Choreography is by Shea New.

Home Depot Celebrate 25 Years In Business
Home Depot donated more than 250,000 volunteer hours through community service projects, which was held the week of Sept. 27 through Oct. 2. Home Depot is dedicating these hours to giving back to the communities where we all live and work in hopes that they will inspire others to get involved. For the local Palm Desert project, the assistant managers came together at Desert Marriott to build 40 playhouses to donate to nonprofit organizations that support children throughout the valley.

Palm Springs Homecoming Parade
On Sept. 29, Officer Pete Rode was the grand marshal for the Palm Springs Homecoming Parade. Rode has served with the Palm Springs Police Department for 23 years, the last several working with local students in programs including DARE, PAL and the Santa Claus Project. The parade featured many participants from Palm Springs High School, Raymond Cree Middle School and Palm Springs Unified elementary schools as well as private schools. Board of Education members, the mayor of Palm Springs, city council members and Palm Springs High School Homecoming Princesses also participated. Entries included floats, cars, trucks, flatbeds and others from various local schools and many Palm Springs High School clubs and classes.

John F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation
The John F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation announced the receipt of a $2-million grant award from First 5 Riverside to operationalize a “Home Visitation Initiative.” On Sept. 29, the board of directors, community officials and business leaders met at the Well Care Clinic in Palm Desert to celebrate the unified support and commitment to the children and families of Riverside County through the success of this very important initiative. On this day, they also provided memorial recognition for the visionary work of the Founding Executive Director John Shields.

Yoga Studio Grand Opening
Go With the Flow Yoga Studio in Palm Desert held its grand opening on Sept. 25. The studio offers a variety of classes ranging from therapeutic corrective exercises, gentle movements to strong, demanding styles of yoga and Pilates.
