-- The mall -- now named Westfield Shoppingtown Palm Desert -- helped turn the city into the Coachella Valley’s retail center, economists, land developers and local elected officials say.

And with that came all the trappings of urban living: Traffic, wider roads, sewer lines, curbed streets -- and sales tax revenues that make Palm Desert’s treasury the envy of all its neighbors.
